History of Lynas Foodservice

The history of Lynas Frozen Foods (LFF) dates back to the late 1940's when Mr Bobbie Lynas was a successful salesman who drove a lorry for a local grocer. In 1948 he opened up his own small shop in Portstewart. However Bobbie suffered from heart trouble and in 1960 Bobbie's son Norman , decided that he should join the business. With Norman 's enthusiasm and Bobbie's experience, the business prospered throughout the 1960's. The fishing division of the business moved to Portavogie in Co. Down, N. Ireland to exploit better landing facilities and to operate bigger fishing trawlers. New vessels were built to expand capacity in the early 1970's but due to the imposition of fishing quotas by the EU, all boats were eventually sold in the 1990's.

During the late 1960's, frozen foods started to be sold in shops throughout Northern Ireland and to be used in the catering business. With the storage capacity of an ice cream freezer and a lorry (parked in his back garden), the supply of frozen foods was started in the late 1960's and early 1970's. Sales of frozen products were small during this time as people were cautious of “new ideas”. However, frozen chips and peas seemed to break the stranglehold, which fresh produce had enjoyed and a steady trade soon developed.

In 1972, a warehouse was purchased at Long Commons in Coleraine, and part of the building was converted into a freezer centre. It was a difficult first year but the fortunes of this part of the division turned around, sales grew and profits increased. As a result, a large freezer unit was built for storage purposes. As business developed, new freezer Lorries were purchased to store the food at the correct temperatures and larger cold stores were constructed with the only constraint on future growth being the location of the site, located in the centre of town which brought with it numerous problems. To overcome these difficulties, a decision was made to buy a site on the edge of Coleraine in an industrial estate where a new cold store and front-loading bays were built during 1990. This expansion facilitated further the development of the business and, indeed, it is on this land that the business is now located.
